Fraser-Surrey Docks, Surrey, British Columbia

The Fraser-Surrey Docks in BC are located on the Surrey side of the Fraser River half way between the Alex Fraser (Annacis) and Patullo bridges.

The port receives vessels from Asia, Latin America, Australia and Europe. They bring containers of consumer goods, steel, aluminum, granite blocks and tires for heavy equipment and leave with Canadian lumber, logs, pulp and paper, manufactured equipment, machinery and re-filled containers. The majority of the seafarers visiting the port come from the Philippines, India, China and Eastern Europe.

Although many vessels visit the Fraser-Surrey Docks,

Port of Hope Canada's chaplain ministry plan is simple:

        - meet and serve eight to ten vessels that routinely return                 to the port and
        - build deep and lasting relationships with the men we are                 likely to meet again several weeks later.

By doing this we become their 'Canadian friends' and they expect us to come and visit them. And because these ships are often from larger companies we often meet these men again on a sister ship.

Would you like to become a volunteer chaplain at the Fraser-Surrey Docks in Surrey, BC?

We need dedicated Christian volunteers with a heart for God who will commit themselves to visiting at least two designated ships whenever they come to port, which is about every seven to ten weeks. Volunteer chaplains will be trained in tracking the ship's arrival, getting permission to visit the ship, onboard safety, seafarer courtesy and care, and cross-cultural ministry.

In addition, we work hard to remain above reproach in our contact with the officers and crew. We maintain strict policies regarding personal relationships with seafarers, which includes what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate touching, how, when and where to meet seafarers on the ship, and how to share your faith in an appropriate and timely manner

These ships would be your personal chaplain ministry. This is a wonderful opportunity for couples to work together in ministry. As you climb the gangway and mingle with the officers and crew you will serve and encourage your seafaring friends with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ and, when it is appropriate, share your faith in a respectful and caring way.
